The state’s best golfers in Classes 1A and 2A got into the swing of things Wednesday, as they played their opening rounds at the UIL state tournament.

In Class 2A boys, Mart’s Bryson Nail shot an opening-round 73 at Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin. That put him in a tie for third with four other golfers. Olney’s Tanner Thompson fired a six-under 65 to grab the early lead.

Hamilton’s Luke Gentry is farther off the pace after a first-round 88.

In Class 2A girls, Moody’s Summer Perkins shot a 95 to open in a tie for 24th. Crawford’s Hannah Williams had a 96 and Dawson’s Lauren Hayes was at 114.

The Iredell Lady Dragons tallied a score of 447, seventh among the 12 Class 1A girls teams.
