AUSTIN – On a course like Grey Rock Golf Club, staying out of trouble is paramount.
Trees line most of the holes on the course, so any errant shot can become a huge problem.
Bruceville-Eddy’s Preston McGinty avoided the big mistake and combined that with a hot putter for a 1-under-par 71 and a two-stroke lead after the opening round of the Class 3A state golf tournament.
“He was putting really well today,” Bruceville-Eddy coach Scott Brothers said. “He wasn’t overshooting anything. Everything was right there by the hole.”
Four players are in a pack at 1-over, so McGinty knows he still has work to do. But Brothers said he wasn’t showing any nerves from the situation Monday night.
“We’ll see how he is tomorrow,” Brothers said. “He’s a pretty level-headed kid, though. He doesn’t let a lot of stuff bother him. He just needs to play his game and not try to do anything special. We’ll take par golf if we can.”
