If it’s the holiday season, then it’s the giving season for the University soccer programs.
Mike Chapman’s teams participate in a variety of regular outreach projects, but their efforts only increase around Christmas.
For example, the teams organized sponsors to provide underprivileged kids with Christmas presents through the Make-A-Wish foundation, and have been delivering those gifts this week. They’ll hit two more elementary campuses Friday morning, and are visiting KWTX-TV’s studios in the evening to pitch in with Toys for Tots.
“On the Make-A-Wish, we were able to gather enough sponsors to spend $150 per kid,” said Chapman, whose boys’ soccer team received the 2013 Trib Sportsmen of the Year. “That’s great, because when we first started doing it, we had $100 per kid.”
The teams will deliver more gifts next week, to Meals on Wheels participants Tuesday and to hospitalized children at Providence and Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Wednesday.
“When you can see those kids’ faces when they get their presents, it makes it all worthwhile,” Chapman said. “And with the Meals on Wheels folks, it’s completely different, because they’re adults, but sometimes we’re the only people they might see at Christmas time. So we try to spend a little time with them.”
