The Teague girls’ basketball team struggled to find its shooting range from beyond the arc or in the paint in the second round of the Class 3A area playoffs.
Instead, the Lady Lions crashed the boards and muscled their way past West for a 53-26 victory on Friday night at MCC’s The Highlands gym.
Teague forward Destanee Roblow registered a prolific double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds as she controlled the paint from early in the first quarter until Teague had a comfortable lead in the second half.
The Lady Lions (30-2) scored three of their first five baskets on put-backs as they opened up a 14-4 lead less than six minutes into the contests and never let up. Teague won the rebounding column, 45-29.
“We missed some shots early on, but we kept hustling,” Teague coach Chris Nickleberry said. “We got three, four different opportunities in one possession. We average about 21 offensive rebounds a game, a whole lot. We’re just scrappy and we hustle. I think that definitely did set the tone for the game.”
By knocking out West (21-12) in the Class 3A Region 3 playoffs, Teague advances to play Grandview in the regional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. on Monday in Corsicana.
Lady Lions guard Kadaja Nickleberry started to feel her shooting touch early in the second quarter as she hit a pair of 3-pointers that fueled a 13-2 run. With the spurt, Teague boosted its edge to 18 points with 2:21 left until halftime.
Nickleberry led the Lady Lions with 21 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Teague used a zone defense to slow down the West offense and kept the Lady Trojans from having any players in double-digits scoring. Forward Tamara Daniel led West with 9.
The Lady Lions won the second quarter 13-3 to take a 29-12 lead to the break and never let West get within 13.
West managed to win the third quarter 11-10 as Daniel made a basket on an assist from Lorelei Uptmore in the first minute and the Lady Trojans’ leading scorer added a put-back a couple of minutes later.
But West couldn’t create enough offensive momentum to slow down Teague’s playoff push.
The Lady Lions came painfully close to a state tournament berth last season. Buffalo eliminated Teague with a buzzer-beater in the regional final at Midway.
Marlin 79, Malakoff 73
Marlin point guard Mystique Womack poured in 42 points and the Lady Bulldogs held off Malakoff.
The Lady Bulldogs (28-8) led 41-27 at halftime before the Lady Tigers began chipping away at the lead late in the third quarter.
Forward Jalie Dawson, who led Malakoff with 31 points, made a fast-break layup with two seconds remaining in the third to cut Marlin’s lead to eight points going to the final period.
The Lady Tigers tied the game at 73 when Dawson completed a 3-point play with 1:22 remaining.
But Womack made 6 of 8 free throws in the final 1:08 and Marlin kept Malakoff from scoring again.
Womack posted 24 points and dished out four assists in the second half.
The Lady Bulldogs advance to play the Little River Academy vs. Keene winner in the Class 3A Region 3 playoffs next week.
