BELTON — The West Lady Trojans brought a little semblance of sunshine to a school district that has been grieving of late.
West rallied from a two-point halftime hole to pull away from Jarrell, 57-43, in the Class 3A girls bi-district basketball playoffs on Monday night at Belton High School. In a nice show of sportsmanship, the two teams gathered in a prayer at midcourt after the game. West students have been mourning the loss of senior classmate Jacob Bates, who died on Thursday after a car accident.
West (21-11) will next face eighth-ranked Teague (29-2) in the 3A area round. That game will be 6:30 p.m. Friday at McLennan Community College’s Highlands Gym.
Against Jarrell, the Lady Trojans fed the ball inside to senior post Tamara Daniel, and she responded, scoring a team-best 20 points. Macey Kucera chipped in 14 points.
China Spring 64, Palestine 36
CORSICANA — China Spring held up the honor of District 17-4A, as the Lady Cougars were the district’s lone representative to pick up a victory over their challengers from 18-4A.
The Lady Cougars (27-8), the district champs, had no problems rolling to a convincing victory, the first playoff win for any of the China Spring players. As usual, they did a nice job of spreading the wealth among the roster. Three players scored in double figures, led by Gabby Cleveland’s 17. Summer Emblem contributed 14 points and Brylee Smith knocked in 10.
Meanwhile, three other players weren’t that far away from double figures for China Spring, as Alex Perkins had nine while Dream Thomas and Abbie Snyder scored seven apiece.
Fairfield 52, Connally 38
CORSICANA — Sophomore center Braden Bossier banged her way to a team-leading 18 points, spurring the Lady Eagles over the Lady Cadets in 4A bi-district action at Navarro College.
Fairfield will move face the winner of Tuesday’s Burnet-Smithville game in the area round.
Connally (22-13), which won its regular-season finale over La Vega in order to get into the postseason, got 21 points from sophomore guard Miannah Little.
Mexia 40, Lorena 36
WEST — The LadyCats scratched past the Lady Leopards in a Class 4A bi-district clash.
Mexia (23-8) moves on to face No. 1-ranked Liberty Hill in the area playoff round later this week.
Teague 68, Blooming Grove 46
In a Class 3A bi-district clash of two sets of Lady Lions at McLennan Community College, eighth-ranked Teague had no problem moving on.
KaDaja Nickleberry had a hot-shooting night for Teague, scoring 25 to pace all scorers. Destanee Roblow, who was a breakout force in last year’s postseason run, scored 21.
Teague (29-2) will next draw West in the area playoffs, and will play on a familiar court, as that matchup is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday back at MCC again.
Madisonville 40, Gatesville 37
CAMERON — The Lady Mustangs came up with the finishing spurt in a back-and-forth 4A bi-district contest.
Gatesville (22-10) trailed by only a point with 1:28 to go, but couldn’t get the clutch bucket it needed to come away with the win.
Axtell 41, Rosebud-Lott 36
The Lady Horns used a balanced, spread-it-out attack to vanquish Rosebud-Lott in a Class 2A bi-district tussle at Midway High School.
Kaitlyn Stevenson scored 14 points, Kathryn Reed hit for 12 and Destiny Sanchez scored 11 for Axtell, which advances to face the winner of Tuesday’s Grapeland-Italy game.
