La Vega girls KO Navasota, 62-48
HUNTSVILLE — If the La Vega Lady Pirates are going to reach the UIL state tournament for a third straight year, they took an important step Friday night.
No. 3 La Vega got 22 points from senior guard Calveion Landrum to take down second-ranked Navasota, 62-48, in the Class 3A, Region III semifinal tournament round at Sam Houston State’s Bowers Coliseum.
The Lady Pirates (32-2) will meet Tatum at 1 p.m. Saturday in the regional championship game, with a state tournament berth on the line.
Navasota (39-1) figured to provide a stiff challenge for La Vega, considering that the Lady Rattlers hadn’t lost all season entering the night.
But La Vega wasted no time in establishing control, jumping to a 25-9 first-quarter lead and never relenting.
While Landrum again was tough to stop, La Vega also received a solid effort from sophomore Ta’Naiya Norwood.
Norwood scored 21 points and hit 5 of 7 free-throw attempts.
Tenaha 50, Rosebud-Lott 36
JEWETT — Tenaha pulled away in the third quarter, halting Rosebud-Lott’s deepest playoff run in years in the Class 2A Region III semifinals.
The Lady Cougars (31-4) trailed just 21-18 at the half, but Tenaha doubled them up in the third quarter to gain some separation.
University falls to Madison, 86-72
MADISONVILLE — For the second year in a row, the University High School boys basketball team couldn’t push past Houston Madison.
The Marlins defeated the Trojans, 86-72, to end University’s season in the Class 5A area round of the playoffs Friday night.
It was all too familiar for University, as last year Madison tallied an 83-67 win at this same stage of the postseason.
Still, it was an eventful season for University (25-8), which won its third district championship in four years.
