LORENA – Michelle Runyan did the heavy lifting, and Lorena’s girls basketball team maintained its district-leading pace with a 43-39 win over Connally on Tuesday night at the Lorena gym.

Runyan, a 5-foot-11 forward, turned in one of her best nights of a strong senior season by scoring 27 points for the Lady Leopards, who improved to 23-8 overall on the year and 8-1 in District 17-4A play.

Connally (20-10, 4-4) did what it could to try to spring the upset, fighting back from a 22-18 halftime deficit to take a 32-30 lead after three quarters. But the Lady Leopards tightened the screws in the fourth quarter, holding the Lady Cadets to just seven points in the final period.

West 38, Bruceville-Eddy 29

WEST – The Lady Trojans won’t have to sweat out the final few games of district play, as they clinched a playoff spot by swatting down the Eagles.

West improves to 18-10 overall and 9-1 in District 19-3A action. Caroline Roessler led a balanced Lady Trojan effort with seven points in the grind-it-out defensive battle. Next up is a battle with high-scoring Mystique Womack and district-leading Marlin on Friday night.

Rosebud-Lott 39, Crawford 38

Rosebud-Lott’s Alex Minor poured in 24 points to help the Lady Cougars pull out a nailbiter over the Lady Pirates in 17-2A action.

Ana Maddox countered with a hot-shooting night for Crawford, scoring 22 points.

China Spring 56, Robinson 37

After taking a bye on Friday night, the Lady Cougars got back down to business, flooring the Rockettes in District 17-4A play.

Gabby Cleveland scored a team-high 13 points, while Dream Thomas contributed 10 for China Spring (23-7, 7-1), which remains in a first-place tie in the district standings, as both Lorena and China Spring have only one loss.

Sydney Jaro topped Robinson with 12 points.

Gatesville 45, La Vega 40

Rebekah Nolte and Allaria Jones combined for 23 points, and Gatesville used a hard-fought defensive effort to take down La Vega.

Nolte scored 12 for Gatesville and Jones added 11. La Vega’s Ta’Naiya Norwood led all scorers with 22, but she didn’t have enough help around her on this night for the Lady Pirates to claim the victory.
