The elevator is going up — way up — in Gatesville.
The Lady Hornets’ basketball team has been one of the highest risers in the state rankings this year. Gatesville was unranked in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches preseason poll, but as of this week sits at No. 8 among Class 4A girls in the TABC’s rankings.
Gatesville boasts a sparkling 24-1 overall record and a 4-0 mark in District 17-4A following Tuesday night’s 42-27 road win over Connally. In that game, the Lady Hornets tightened the defensive screws, holding the Lady Cadets to under 10 points in every quarter and just 12 points in the first half.
It’s nothing new, either. Only three of Gatesville’s opponents have cracked 40 points this year, and nobody has reached 50.
Junior post Allaira Jones scored 25 points and snatched eight rebounds in the win over Connally, while Rebekah Nolte added 11 points.
