CONROE — The Blackcats showed some feistiness, but couldn’t spring the upset of the two-time defending state champion Mustangs in the Class 4A Division II area round.

It was the 37th straight win for the Mustangs (10-0), who will meet Madisonville in the regional semifinals next week. Mexia (6-6) hurt itself with a fumble in the first quarter, as West Orange-Stark took over on the Blackcat 16. From there, quarterback Chaka Watson scampered in for the touchdown run and a quick 7-0 lead.

Mexia’s defense helped keep the game close thereafter, including a fumble recovery at the 3-yard line in the second quarter when it appeared the Mustangs were about to score. The Blackcats also got a strip sack by Gary McQuirter Jr. in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t ever punch the ball into the end zone.
