CAMERON — To fly past a powerhouse, it helps if you have a Jett.
Gatesville’s Jett Truss accounted for four touchdowns as the Hornets stunned Class 3A’s No. 1-ranked Cameron Yoe, 31-26, on Friday night.
Cameron’s D.J. Fripp scored on an 18-yard run to push the Yoemen (1-1) into the lead at 26-25 with 7:05 to play. But Truss and the Hornets (2-0) would not be denied. They mounted a game-winning drive that culminated in a 10-yard Truss TD run with 1:28 to play, going up 31-26 after the failed two-point pass.
The Yoemen still had a chance to pull out a last-second win, driving all the way to the 1-yard line of Gatesville with time winding down. However, an apparent touchdown was wiped out by an illegal motion penalty, and then on the next play, the Yoemen fumbled and Gatesville recovered to preserve the win.
Truss ran for 121 yards and three TDs while throwing for 141 yards and a 20-yard TD to Zach Mueller.
The Yoemen’s Zack Andress threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns, but was picked off twice.
