Manvel 49, Temple 34
PRAIRIE VIEW – Helped along by three first-half Temple turnovers, the Mavericks built a two-score advantage by the break and held off the Wildcats in a rematch of last year’s Region III-5A Div. I final.
Manvel (13-0) advances on to the state semifinals to face Angleton, a 41-10 winner over Richmond Foster on Friday. Temple, which defeated Manvel, 24-23, in last year’s playoffs, closes out another strong season at 10-4. The Wildcats will move from Class 5A to 6A next year.
After trailing by 20 points after three quarters, the Wildcats scratched back to within one score on T.J. Rumfield’s 1-yard touchdown pass to D’yonte Heckstall with seven minutes to play. However, the Mavericks responded on their ensuing drive, picking up a key fourth-down conversion to set up Kason Martin’s 8-yard TD keeper that pushed the gap back to two touchdowns.
Rumfield threw for three TD passes in the defeat, including two to Heckstall.
