In a battle of Lions, it was Teague’s ferocious second-half performance that pushed it into the next round of the playoffs.
Trailing at halftime by a point, Teague and senior running back Tayvis Coleman went beast mode on Franklin the rest of the way for a 41-14 victory in a Class 3A, Division I regional game at Waco ISD Stadium.
Coleman rushed 18 times for 200 yards and four touchdowns to lead Teague (11-2).
Teague outscored Franklin 28-0 in the second half, turning a nail-biter through the first two quarters into a relatively easy win.
Teague will next face Rockdale (10-3), a 31-21 winner over West, in a state quarterfinal game.
The first half resembled a heavyweight fight, with both teams’ strong running games pounding the opposition. After a false start on the first play of the game, Franklin (10-3) methodically marched 71 yards on 15 plays behind a steady diet of Jared Pedraza, Clayton Rosprim and Nick Lopez. Pedraza punched in the first score from 5 yards out.
Pedraza scored both of Franklin’s touchdowns, making it a 14-7 game with 7:29 to go before halftime on a 35-yard run. Pedraza was Franklin’s leading rusher with 117 yards on 13 carries.
Franklin followed that score by surprising Teague with an onside kick. Franklin’s Kobe Lebreche recovered the ball at the 50, but Franklin stalled at Teague’s 16 and turned the ball over on downs.
It took just four plays for Teague to find the end zone. Coleman gained 18 yards on the next two plays before quarterback Zack Satterwhite hit Antonio Heard with a pass for 26 yards to get to Franklin’s 40.
Coleman did the rest, making a big cut to the right and sailing untouched to cut Franklin’s lead to 14-13.
However, Robert Escobedo’s point-after kick was blocked by Franklin’s David Stegall to keep Franklin ahead going into intermission.
But it was all Teague from there.
On Teague’s possession to open the second half, Satterwhite hit Heard on a short pass play, but Heard raced through the defense for a 55-yard gain to the 7. It took Coleman three carries, scoring from a yard out.
Coleman stepped it up on Teague’s next possession, with a big 58-yard TD run in which he stiff-armed a Franklin defender for a 15-yard stretch before the player finally fell at the 10. Escobedo’s extra-point kick made it a 27-14 game.
Teague’s defense then asserted itself again. With Franklin backed up on its end of the field, linebacker Dayveon Dixon intercepted Colton Ortner’s pass at the 8 and strolled in the end zone to make it a 34-14 lead with 7:03 left in the third quarter.
Teague’s final score came with 9:02 to play on a beautiful 18-yard pass to Heard in the back of the end zone.
Satterwhite was 6-for-8 passing for 128 yards. Heard hauled in three catches for 99 yards.
