GEORGETOWN — Don’t cross a Blackcat, it’s bad luck for your offense.
Mexia’s snarling defense kept up its fine play, as the Blackcats snuffed out Gonzales at every turn in a win in the Class 4A Division II bi-district playoffs. The reward for Mexia (6-5) is a date with second-ranked and defending state champion West-Orange Stark (9-0) in next week’s area round.
Mexia took control by building a 17-0 lead by intermission, scoring on a Jadrian Smith direct-snap run and a Travion Carter 19-yard scramble. The Blackcats’ ball-hawking defense made sure that lead would never be threatened, as they stopped Gonzales every way possible, forcing punts, takeaways and turnovers on downs. The Apaches didn’t crack the scoreboard until the midpoint of the fourth quarter, at which point the Blackcats had 30 points on the board.
