MEXIA — In a blackout rivalry game, Mexia became the first team to darken the district ledger of Fairfield.

The Blackcats (4-5, 2-2 in District 9-4A) picked off Fairfield quarterback Chad Rushin in yet another impressive defensive performance. Rushin did connect with Cody Ferguson on an 18-yard score with 2:02 to play to bring Fairfield (5-4, 3-1) within a score.

But Mexia’s big-play defense delivered, as Ty Gamble intercepted Rushin on Fairfield’s final possession with time winding down to seal the Blackcat win.
