Refugio (13-1) vs. Mart (14-1)
Round: Class 2A Division I finals
When/where: 7 p.m. Wednesday at AT&T Stadium, Arlington
Players to watch: Mart QB Jace Terry, LB Cooper Baize; Refugio QB Jared Kelley, kicker Diego Gonzalez
Breakdown: A 20-point winner a week ago to push the Panthers to their first state championship appearance since 2012, Mart is set to take on perennial powerhouse Refugio in what will undoubtedly be a game full of offensive fireworks.
The Panthers have playmakers. QB Jace Terry and his talented backfield joins Houston commit and wideout Zamar Kirven on an offense that hasn’t flinched so far in the postseason. It will need to be sharp and score in bunches against a Refugio team that has dropped 70 and 63 points against opponents in the postseason.
“We have athletes and they do, too,” Mart head coach Kevin Hoffman said. “We know who we are going up against and their tradition. We know we have to play smart football and be disciplined.”
Refugio’s Diego Gonzalez drilled an 18-yarder to beat Crawford in last year’s Class 2A Division I championship game, so don’t expect the Bobcats to wilt under pressure. It was the school’s first title since 2011 and fourth overall.
Quarterback Jared Kelley is a passing machine, throwing for over 4,000 yards this season to lead an offense that has been near impossible to stop.
“I guarantee a team like that won’t be afraid of the four letters across the front of our chests,” Hoffman said. “We know we have to show up and play our best football.”
