LORENA — For the Lorena Leopards, this is shaping up a lot like 2016.
And that will work just fine.
After dropping their first three games to China Spring, La Vega and Franklin, the Leopards got on the winning track with a 49-26 win over Lampasas on Friday night. That matches last year, when the Leopards lost their first three to those same opponents before running off an eight-game winning streak and a district title.
Having Thor Hoffman back helps. He used his mighty hammer in the running game, scoring five touchdowns, including a long of 54 yards in the third quarter.
Lampasas (1-3) showed off its big-strike ability at times, including on a 99-yard TD pass from Ace Whitehead to Brandon Pierino midway through the third quarter.
But Lorena’s defense made enough plays to hold the Badgers at bay, including an interception by Cam Bryant in the end zone and another pick by Hayden Schrader.
Central Texas high school football is a haven for playmakers.
