DUBLIN — Ethan Lilljedahl was one of the heroes of Jonesboro’s run to the state final a year ago.
So why not fill that role again?
Lilljedahl put the finishing touches on an epic rally when he scored the winning touchdown with two minutes to play, lifting the Eagles past May in the Region III-1A Division I final.
Jonesboro (12-1) trailed 20-0 midway through the second quarter, but never stopped fighting. The Eagles pulled to within 26-20 by halftime, as Jonesboro’s Alex Sarmiento caught two touchdown passes in less than a minute.
The Eagles kept coming in the second half, eventually moving ahead 49-34 in the fourth quarter before May (12-1) staged its own rally, going up 50-49. But Lilljedahl and the Eagles had the final answer.
Jonesboro moves on to meet Tioga in the state semifinals next week.
