Facing a defense that doesn’t give up many points, Pleasant Grove thumped West Orange-Stark in the Class 4A Div. II state championship, 41-21.
The game couldn’t have started any better for the Hawks (16-0), as quarterback Ben Harmon hit TJ Cole for a 75-yard pass on the first play from scrimmage to take the early 7-0 lead over the Mustangs (13-1). It was a lead Pleasant Grove would not relinquish.
Cole snagged a 34-yard pass from Harmon later in the first quarter for a score and ran in another at the end of the half to put the Hawks up 21-6.
Cole was named the game’s offensive MVP, finishing with 98 yards rushing and 104 receiving with three total touchdowns. The defensive MVP award went to Caleb Porchia.
Carthage 49, Kennedale 21
In the Class 4A Div. I state tilt, Carthage built a 35-point lead into the third quarter on its way to a dismantling of Kennedale.
The Bulldogs (16-0) were not messing around in the first three quarters, as quarterback Gunner Capps hurled two touchdowns to help put Carthage up 28-7 at intermission over the Wildcats (14-2). The offensive MVP finished with 365 yards through the air and three touchdowns.
