WHITNEY — For a little guy, Shatydrick Bailey sure knows how to come up big.
Bailey, a 5-foot-3 waterbug of a running back, scored four touchdowns as fifth-ranked Mart claimed its 12th consecutive victory on the season, thumping previously unbeaten De Leon, 47-7, on Friday night at Whitney’s Wildcat Stadium.
Mart (12-1) will face Central Texas rival Crawford (11-2) in the Region II-2A Div. I final next week.
Tyrek Horne broke into the clear on a 70-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter, then added another minutes later as Mart built a quick 14-0 lead. The Panthers kept up the momentum, eventually building the score to 26-0 when Zamar Kirven came up with an interception return for a touchdown.
De Leon (12-1) managed to crack the scoreboard moments later on a long TD bomb. But Mart’s stingy defense wouldn’t allow another crease the rest of the way, and Bailey kept the Panthers’ offense running in high gear with his speedy runs around the end. That included matching Horne with a 70-yard TD jaunt of his own.
Horne added the cherry on the sundae with a 5-yard TD run with just over five minutes to play, extending the lead to 47-7.
