The weather has taken a slight turn for the cooler in recent days, a welcome development when you spend those days running around outside.
More than a thousand runners will try to take advantage in the Hewitt Kiwanis Invitational on Thursday at the Heart of Texas Soccer Complex, hosted by Midway.
“It’s a pretty good field, not the biggest we’ve ever had, but a good one,” Midway coach Ronny Boles said. “We’ve got the Waco High girls, both Corsicana schools, a lot of little schools, probably 36 schools in all.”
One runner who will look to keep up his current hot pace is Midway’s Cal Johnston. The senior charged to victory in the Belton Invitational his last time out, and is competing with a certain tunnel vision this year, Boles said.
“He’s a very focused young man,” Boles said. “He wants to get to state, which is hard to do in 6A, but he’s really focused. Obviously that’s a long way down the road, but he’s running well early.”
The sub-varsity races at the Hewitt Kiwanis Invitational will get rolling at 8:15 a.m., followed by the 1A-4A girls at 9:30. The 5A and 6A girls will follow at 9:45, and the all-classifications boys’ race will commence at 10:15.
