EDDY — For as long as he could remember, Kyle Doty has been chasing his older brother Tye.

In many ways, he’s still chasing him, even as Kyle has carved out his own awe-inspiring path.

Doty is a senior standout distance runner at Bruceville-Eddy, just like Tye was before him. Kyle signed this week to run cross country and track for Tarleton State, where Tye was an all-conference runner who just completed his college tenure.

“It helped that Tye went to Tarleton, too. I was familiar with the program. I want to go there and beat all of his records,” Kyle said, grinning.

On Saturday, Kyle will return to a familiar stage — the UIL State Cross Country Championships at Round Rock’s Old Settlers Park — as he tries to claim the second state cross country title of his brilliant career.

Doty has reached state in cross country each of his four years at Bruceville-Eddy. After a seventh-place finish as a freshman in 2013, he charged to a gold medal a year later as a sophomore, then picked up a bronze last year.

As he gets ready for the “bell lap,” so to speak, he’s craving nothing but gold.

“I definitely expect nothing but the best in my last time at state,” Doty said.

Doty said he feels like he is in the best shape of his life. His workout sessions haven’t really changed since he was a freshman — he runs about 55 miles per week, roughly the distance from Bruceville-Eddy to Georgetown. But he has learned to take a little bit better care of his body.

“I’ve just become a lot healthier over the past year,” he said. “I’ve been trying to eat better, and it’s made a difference.”

Of course, he still has his guilty pleasures — chocolate candy chief among them.

But he’ll eschew the candy bars on Saturday, as he runs the final cross country race of his high school career. Doty is as comfortable and prepared as he could possibly be. He knows the course, he knows the competition, and he’s just prepared to go out and perform to the best of his ability.

Besides, could the challenge be any tougher than the races around the neighborhood with Tye?

“We’ve been pretty competitive our whole lives,” Doty said. “Growing up, we went at it all the time, but I’m grateful for his support.”
