#8 Copperas Cove 60, #16 Midway 53
COPPERAS COVE – Cove junior guard Madison Griffon led all scorers with 22 points to rally the eighth-ranked Lady Bulldawgs to a win over 16th-ranked Midway in District 8-6A action.
Midway (13-4, 0-2) pushed out to a 30-28 lead by halftime, but Cove (17-2, 2-0) made the plays it needed down the stretch. The Pantherettes have dropped two tough ones to open district play, both to state-ranked teams, in Ellison and Cove.
La Vega 66, Hillsboro 45
Super Centex star Ta’Naiya Norwood pumped in a game-best 24 points as La Vega opened District 17-4A action with a runaway home win over Hillsboro.
While Norwood was as steady as ever, she had help, with four La Vega players finding double figures. Montierra Warren scored 17 for the Lady Pirates (8-6, 1-0), Jaurne Hubert had 12 and Camerion Bradley chipped in 11.
Jade Bontke hit for 22 points to top Hillsboro.
China Spring 49, Gatesville 42
The Lady Cougars pulled out a hard-fought home win over Gatesville in the District 17-4A opener, in a battle of a pair of playoff teams from a year ago.
China Spring (11-5, 1-0) got 13 points apiece from Gabrielle Cleveland and Dream Thomas. Gatesville’s Rebekah Nolte countered with 13 points, while returning district MVP Allaria Jones was limited to 12.
Connally 85, Southern Australia 74
The 11th-ranked Cadets not only veered out of the state for a nondistrict game, they welcomed in a team all the way from Australia. In the end, Connally took the over on the scoreboard from the visitors from Down Under.
Sidney Hadden led all scorers with 22 points for Connally (10-4), while Trajan Snell added 15 and Korie Black had 11.
