A fight between the Midway and University boys basketball teams on Tuesday night at Midway High led to police being called to the school and the game being called early.

A video posted to Twitter account @OK_Jermo on Tuesday night shows Midway forward Kaitori Leveston in a shoving match with several University players and another Midway player being helped off the floor in front of the University bench.

The video also shows a player from University come up from behind Leveston and strike him twice in the head.

Officials called the game with 3:40 left in the fourth quarter.

“We have a process and that’s to investigate and handle it internally,” Waco ISD athletic director Johnny Tusa said. “We will visit with the UIL after we’ve investigated, and there won’t be a comment after that. We have a standard punishment in these situations, but that would only come after an investigation and it won’t be shared with the media.”

Waco ISD later released a statement about the incident through its public relations department.

“Waco ISD would like to apologize for the part our University High School athletes played in the incident,” the statement read. “We are identifying the players involved — including the ones who left the bench area — and those student-athletes will be disciplined internally. We have also reported the incident and the consequences for our athletes to the UIL.

“Waco ISD does not condone the actions in the final moments of that contest, and under no circumstances should any player leave the bench area during the game. We appreciate the quick actions of coaches, administrators and police last night to ensure the safety of our students and fans, and are thankful there were no injuries.”

Midway ISD did not respond to a request for comment.
