For the first time in three years, the Class 3A state baseball champions will not be the West Trojans.
Franklin bounced the two-time defending state champs in a hard-fought Class 3A bi-district series, taking a 5-4 decisive win in game 3 of the series on Saturday.
Franklin took Friday’s opening game of the series in an equally tight game, pulling out a 3-2 win in 10 innings. But West bounced back in Saturday’s second game, rolling to an 11-0 win to even the series.
But the rubber match went the way of the Lions, sending West to an uncharacteristic early exit.
Midway’s Dickey throws a no-hitter
IRVING — Midway’s Logan Dickey tossed a no-hitter in spurring the Panthers to a 4-0 win over Irving Nimitz, completing the series sweep in the teams’ Class 6A bi-district matchup.

Veteran ace Dru Dziedzic hurled Robinson (24-2) to the shutout, run-rule win in the opening game, while his buddy Braxton Aschraft matched him with another shutout in the second game.
Robinson will face Taylor in the 4A area playoffs next week at a site and time to be announced.
Lorena rebounds to beat Giddings
GEORGETOWN – Lorena was down, but not out.
After dropping the series opener on Friday, the Lady Leopards charged from behind to win each of the next two over Giddings on Saturday. Lorena powered to a 6-2 win in Game 2, then followed with a 3-0 shutout victory in the clincher to extend its season.
Emma Tindell smacked a big home run early in the clinching game to get the scoring started. The score remained 1-0 until the sixth, when Tindell made it 2-0 with an RBI triple and then the Lady Leopards added an insurance run on a Damiana Longo single.
Lorena will face Salado in the Region III-4A quarterfinals next week.
Midway advances to quarterfinals
MIDLOTHIAN – Faith Fernandez drove home the winning run in the 10th inning, and Midway advanced the Class 6A regional quarterfinals in enthralling fashion, with a 7-6 win over Plano in Game 3 of their 6A area-round series.
Midway (28-7) lost Friday’s opening game by a 2-0 score, forcing the Pantherettes to have to rally from behind in the series. And that’s just what they did. Helped along by a two-run home run from Sophie Wideman, Midway topped Plano, 3-1, in the second game of the series on Saturday.
The finale was a dramatic, back-and-forth affair, as the teams were tied 6-6 after seven regulation innings. That’s the way the score remained until the 10th, when the Pantherettes broke through with the winning run.

But the finale went the way of the Rockettes, thanks to Tyeann Johnson’s clutch hit that drove home Amanda Marek with the winning run.
