AUSTIN – Now that’s the way to announce your presence.
Reicher’s softball team created plenty of noise with its bats, banging out 15 hits in a 14-1 run-rule win over Round Rock Concordia in the TAPPS Division III state semifinals on Friday. The Lady Cougars (20-8-1) will play Schertz John Paul II for the state title at 6 p.m. Saturday at Concordia University in Austin.
Reicher left no doubt in the semifinals, as the Lady Cougars erupted for seven runs in the first two innings. Ana Watson led the way at the dish for Reicher, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Katie Guffey, Katelyn Young and Taylor Young all chipped in two hits apiece.
That was more than enough run support for Reicher pitcher Madalynn Gonzales, who gave up only one hit in five innings to Concordia.
Reicher will be looking for its first state softball title since 2014. Schertz John Paul, which defeated Austin School for the Deaf, 19-0, in the other semifinal, will be gunning for its third consecutive state crown.
PLANO EAST 11, MIDWAY 5
MANSFIELD – The Pantherettes flashed some nice power, but couldn’t match the hitting of Plano East, which advanced to the Class 6A regional semifinals.
Plano East showed a mighty hitting stroke in jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the second game of the series Friday. But Midway (27-10) didn’t go down without a fight. The Pantherettes battled back to pull within 8-4 in the third inning. Midway later added a fifth run on a solo homer from Sophie Wideman, who had some huge base knocks in the playoffs.
But the Pantherettes couldn’t cool off the bats of Plano East, which advances to face either Arlington Martin or Keller in the next round.
LORENA 6, SALADO 1
BELTON – Even the pressure of a one-game playoff couldn’t faze Lorena.
The Lady Leopards broke open a tie game with some late-inning heroics, taking down Salado in the 4A regional quarterfinals. Lorena advances to face the winner of Bridge City and Hardin-Jefferson in next week’s regional semifinals.
The score was bunched at 1 until Lorena (25-3-2) delivered a five-run sixth inning to pull away. That outburst was helped along by a clutch two-run double from Rachel Williams, scoring Jordan Generals and Ashley Guyton with the go-ahead runs.
SOUTHLAKE CARROLL 6, MIDWAY 1
GLEN ROSE – The Dragons halted Midway’s baseball playoff run in the Class 6A area round, defeating the Panthers, 6-1, on Friday to sweep the series.
Midway (21-11-1) had dropped Thursday’s opener, 2-1. The Panthers put runners in scoring position throughout the night, but couldn’t bring them around. Carroll got a big two-run double from Wyatt Stapp on its way to the win.
ROBINSON 11, TAYLOR 4
ROGERS – The third-ranked Rockets declipped the Ducks to sweep the series and move on to the Class 4A regional quarterfinals.
Braxton Ashcraft picked up the win on the hill, and the Rocket hitters provided ample run support. Robinson will draw either Athens or Salado in next week’s third round.
ABBOTT 10, LIPAN 1
BURLESON – Brett Mynar delivered a complete-game one-hitter as the No. 1-ranked Panthers cruised to a Game 1 win over Lipan.
Abbott improves to 24-2 on the year with the victory. The series will resume at 4 p.m. Saturday. Should the Panthers fall, a third and decisive game would follow.
