The likelihood that the 45-point mercy rule will come into play when Calvert plays its district schedule is pretty high.

The Trojans are ranked No. 1 in six-man Division II entering the year, and are loaded for another run at their second state championship in school history.

Behind Calvert, hope glimmers for two teams looking to end long playoff droughts. Oglesby hasn’t made the postseason in 16 years, while Buckholts last played in Week 11 in 1997. Those two should grapple for second.

Oglesby Tigers

Head coach: Wayne Stigler (1st season)

Playoff history: 13-8 in 14 trips, most recently 1994; 0 state championships

Returning: 6 lettermen; 5 offensive, 5 defensive starters

Outlook: Stigler comes to Oglesby from Prairie Lea, and he’s plenty familiar with Calvert, a frequent district foe.

The Tigers have 10 players out, so Stigler said everyone has had to learn multiple positions. “But if we stay healthy, I think we have the intangibles to make the playoffs,” the coach said.

QB/S Austin Labrie will handle signal-calling duties, and he has a solid blocker in front of him in OL/LB Theron West. Sophomore FB/LB Brandon Burchell was a second-team all-region honoree last year as a freshman.
