District previews

After playing an outlaw schedule in its first season on the six-man level last year, Evant shifts into a district for the first time.

The competition for a playoff spot will be thick, though, as Lometa returns a whopping 16 lettermen off a regional semifinalist team, and Rochelle figures to be tough after winning nine games in 2009.

Evant Elks

Head coach: Nathan Kuehler (2nd season: 5-5)

All-time: 5-5 since 2009 in six-man; 227-357-12 in 11-man

Playoff history: 0 in six-man; 0-2 in 2 trips in 11-man, most recently 2004; 0 state championships

Returning: 5 lettermen; 5 offensive, 5 defensive starters

Outlook: It was a learning experience last year for the Elks, who shifted to six-man after half a century on the 11-man level. “The kids found that they actually enjoyed the six-man game better,” Kuehler said.

Evant has some nice experience returning, led by QB/CB Jay Gandy (right) and RB Joey Lancaster. SE/DE Eric Garcia and SE/DE Jon Straley are tall targets in the passing game, while C/NG Cooper Gaisbauer anchors both lines.
