District previews

There probably isn’t a state contender in this revamped district, but Leverett’s Chapel figures to be the favorite with nine players back on an eight-win squad in 2009.

Oakwood has some talent, but don’t count out Coolidge making a run at its first playoff berth in four years.

Coolidge Yellow Jackets

Head coach: James Pinnell (1st season)

Playoff history: 5-9 in 10 trips, most recently 2006; 0 state championships

Returning: 7 lettermen; 3 offensive, 3 defensive starters

Outlook: Pinnell coached softball at Granbury last year, but has six-man coaching experience at Blum and Morgan, and is excited about the challenge at Coolidge.

Junior running back James Johnson (1,281 yards, 18 TDs) and QB Jalen Hayes are proven playmakers, while senior DE/SE Payton Burkhart and RB/LB D.J. Reeves also offer experience. The brother tandem of Brady and Tyler Moore will see action at center and end, respectively.

Pinnell is most pleased about Coolidge’s size, with a couple of 220-pound-plus players.
