District previews

Re-alignment doesn’t always produce fair districts, but Meridian may have hit the jackpot in 9-1A Division II.

Despite a 3-7 record in 2009, the Yellowjackets return experience on the line. That can’t be said for every team.

Add in the opposition’s record — 10-29 with a best record of 4-5 — and Meridian appears in good shape as any to take home the crown.

Meridian Yellowjackets

Head coach: Todd Doughty (2nd season: 3-7)

All-time: 441-281-29 since 1920

Playoff history: 7-19-1 in 21 trips, most recently 2007; 0 state championships

Returning: 13 lettermen; 7 offensive, 7 defensive starters

Outlook: With an experienced team returning, Meridian has a shot not only to make playoffs, but to win the district.

Meridian’s linemen will likely prove the difference in most games as OG/DT Jesus Pinon, OT Albert Flores and OT Billy Miller will provide ample room for RB Juan Galindo, who had 785 yards rushing last year.

Galindo is also the team leader in tackles from ’09 with 56.
