Tribune-Herald staff report
Freshman guard Nicole Walton scored 30 points as the McLennan Community College Highlassies continued their remarkable run through conference play, beating previously unbeaten Weatherford, 79-76, on Wednesday night at The Highlands.
Despite a narrow one-point lead at halftime, MCC (15-6, 7-0) snatched command in the early stages of the second half, opening on an 8-2 run. Weatherford (12-4, 6-1) battled back to pull within 77-76 with 28 seconds to play. But MCC got a pair of clutch free throws from Walton with just under 12 seconds left to ice the win.
Ex-Waco High product Richarda Outley chipped in 12 points for MCC and Priscilla Galliguez had 11. Tanesha Wilkins topped Weatherford with 21.
In the nightcap, Weatherford’s Roderick Fleming knocked down two big buckets in the final 25 seconds to spark the Coyotes over the homestanding Highlanders, 71-67.
MCC (16-6, 3-3) led by as many as eight in the first half before the conference-leading Coyotes (18-3, 6-0) rallied behind Fleming, who led all scorers with 23 points.
For the Highlanders, former La Vega star Jordan Glynn tallied 18 points, while Walt Harris picked up 16 and Kerri Hagood swished in 13 in a return from injury.
