Midway’s football linemen stepped into the spotlight last weekend by claiming the Lineman Challenge state championship on Friday and Saturday in Austin.
The Panthers posted a team score of 161 in the multiple-event competition to edge second place Arlington Heights by 12 points in the overall standings.
Midway’s squad included tight end Trey Graham, tackles Ty Horn and Jack Sorrells, guards Clay Rusek and Charles Terrell, defensive end Terrance Holloman, defensive tackle Jermon Harris and center Zach Northern.
In the Lineman Challenge, linemen compete in eight events — tire flip, truck push, bench press, sled drag, sled pull, farmer’s walk, sand bags and medicine ball.
Midway led a contingent of five Central Texas programs that competed in the 23-team Lineman Challenge state meet. Salado finished seventh with 130 points, China Spring took 11th with 106 points, McGregor placed 12th with 91 points, and Hillsboro finished 22nd with 39 points.
