After only his second career start, Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin was named Big 12 offensive player of the week.
Griffin rushed for a school-record 217 yards on just 11 carries in Baylor’s 45-17 blowout of Washington State Friday night at Floyd Casey Stadium.
The freshman from Copperas Cove established a Big 12 record by averaging 19.7 yards per carry while running for two touchdowns. He became the first Baylor player with three runs of 50-plus yards in a game as he broke away for a 58-yard touchdown and added runs of 58 and 57 yards.
Griffin also hit seven of 15 passes for 129 yards, and found Ernest Smith for a 27-yard touchdown.
“We’re proud that Robert was recognized for Baylor and the football program,” Baylor coach Art Briles said. “He’s a dynamic player who is intelligent and is very productive with the ball in his hands. He’s excited but he understands that a lot of guys helped to make it happen. ”
Griffin became just the fourth Baylor player to be named Big 12 offensive player of the week, joining Jonathan Golden (2002), Shawn Bell (2006) and Blake Szymanski (2007).
Griffin won the award over some stiff competition, including Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, who hit 18 of 21 passes for 304 yards and five touchdowns. Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel hit 23 of 28 passes for 405 yards and four touchdowns.
Texas Tech strong safety Daniel Charbonnet was named Big 12 defensive player of the week after intercepting three passes against SMU. Missouri kicker Jeff Wolfert received special teams player of the week honors.
The Bears will play their first road game at Connecticut Friday at 7 p.m.
