NEW YORK – Manu Lecomte will likely be one of several Baylor players who will try to cover South Carolina guard Sindarius Thornwell, the SEC player of the year.

It’s not an easy task. Thornwell averaged 21.4 points and 7.3 rebounds while dishing out 2.9 assists per game.

“He’s a great player,” Lecomte said. “He’s a tough player. He’s a great rebounder as well, so we’re going to have to box him out, even when he doesn’t have the ball in his hands. He’s their most dangerous man on the court, so we’re going to have to do a great job defending them.”

Wainright boasts of big family

It seems like Baylor senior forward Ish Wainright has friends everywhere.

Wainright is from Kansas City, so he had family there for the Big 12 tournament. He even has family connections in the Northeast.

“My older brother stays in New York,” Wainright said. “I have a childhood friend who stays in Brooklyn. I also have family in Boston, they’re coming down.

“My family’s big. Really big.”

Drew’s brother Bryce a Gamecock source

Baylor coach Scott Drew has a go-to source to gather information on South Carolina.

His brother, Bryce Drew, just finished his first season as Vanderbilt’s head coach. The Commodores dropped a 68-66 decision to Northwestern in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Bryce obviously knows the Gamecocks very well since they’re SEC opponents.

“It’s always good to get opinions from people that know who they’re talking about but also have your best interests at heart,” Scott Drew said. “So they’re not going to give you pat answers. They’ll give you critical answers if need be and give you a different perspective.”

Drew reiterates Baylor headed in right direction

When asked if he’s had to deal with a lot of negative attention after Baylor’s sexual assault scandal that involved the football program, Scott Drew said he’s pleased with the progress the university has made.

“People that know Baylor know that we have good people, it’s a good institution,” Drew said. “We’re trying to make it better, which is something that I’m proud of with the changes and implementations and things we put into place. The goal’s to be the safest college campus in the country and that’s an admirable goal.”
