The Baylor women’s basketball team picked up two major commits on Tuesday in Aquira DeCosta and Honesty Scott-Grayson. They are both part of the 2018 class.
DeCosta, a 6-foot-2 forward from Sacramento, is ranked fourth in the country in her class and is the top wing in the country. She considered USC, Tennessee, Louisville and defending national champion South Carolina.
DeCosta posted a video on Twitter about her decision before posting this statement. “This is truly a blessing to finally announce which program I will be attending for the next 4 years of my life. Before doing so, I would like to thank God for opening up many doors for me and helping me go through the tough times throughout my life. Also, I would like to thank my family for being a major influence in my life and for being my number one supporters. Next, I would like to thank all of the coaches that have impacted my life including Coach Que, Coach Noa, Coach Ruthie, Coach Thom, Coach Kelly and others. You have all molded me into the athlete I am today and for that I will forever be appreciative.
“Lastly, I would like to thank my teammates from Cal Stars Nike EYBL to St. Mary’s High School. You all have made such an impact in my life and I love every single one of you guys and you will always be family to me. Thank you to all of the other colleges that offered me and have been a part of the recruiting process and I wish nothing but the best for those programs. With that being said, I am honored to announce my commitment to Baylor University!”
Scott-Grayson, a 5-foot-10 guard from Maryland, is ranked second across the nation in her position and 18th overall in her class. She’s been recruited by Connecticut, Maryland and Notre Dame.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank God for blessing me with the ability to play the game I love at such a high level,” Scott-Grayson said on Twitter Tuesday evening. “This has been a long journey and I have to say, it’s been a great experience overall. I’ve met a lot of people and made a lot of friends throughout this process. My mom and my brother have been my rock and I love and appreciate them so so much.
“I want to thank my family, coaches, teammates and friends who have supported me along the way. This has been an extremely tough decision for me and I will always appreciate all of the schools who have recruited me over the years. In this moment in time, I have decided to further my academic and basketball career at Baylor University!!”
DeCosta and Scott-Grayson join Nalyssa Smith and Caitlin Bickle as the commits in Baylor’s 2018 class. Smith, a 6-foot-2 forward from San Antonio, committed to Baylor in early September. Smith is the No. 8 player in the nation in her class and ranked third at her position. Bickle, a 6-foot-1 wing from Arizona, is the 28th player in her class and ranked fourth at her position.
The Lady Bears open practice for the 2017-18 season at 1:30 p.m. Friday on the main court inside the Ferrell Center.
