Wide Receiver U has another new pledge to initiate.
Baylor picked up its second receiver commitment in four days when Mesquite Horn’s Jared Atkinson chose the Bears Wednesday. Atkinson (6-3, 199) joined Daingerfield’s Denzel Mims as the latest receiver to pick Baylor, as Mims announced his commitment Sunday.
Atkinson said he appreciated the genuine nature of Baylor’s coaching staff.
“They really said that they would help me on and off the field,” Atkinson said. “Most colleges and universities just say what you want to hear. I felt like the Baylor coaches were up front with me.”
Atkinson is unranked by Rivals.com and the other major recruiting services, but that didn’t prevent him from catching the eye of college scouts. He also had offers from SMU, Texas Tech, Texas State, Iowa State and Illinois State.
He took an unofficial visit to Baylor last week, and liked what he saw, both from the football facilities and the campus.
“It was great, I loved it,” he said. “It’s also nice that it’s close to home. I can’t stay away from my parents for too long. I’m not real comfortable being far away.”
Atkinson tallied 10 catches for 216 yards and a touchdown for Mesquite Horn last year, and also chipped in 197 yards rushing and two more TDs. He thinks he should fit in nicely in Baylor’s spread offense — “We run basically the same thing at my school,” he said — and he’s hungry to grow and develop his skills, both in his upcoming senior season at Horn and once he arrives in Waco.
“I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get better,” Atkinson said. “I think once I get to Baylor, I’ll have a chance to get a lot better than I am now.”
Atkinson is the 10th commitment of the 2016 signing class. Commitments are non-binding until signing day in February.
