Baylor picked up its sixth football commitment in the 2017 class as it received a pledge from Abilene High School 3-star running back Abram Smith on Thursday.
Smith is expected to enroll at Baylor for the upcoming spring semester along with Lake Travis quarterback Charlie Brewer and Stafford athlete Jalen Pitre.
Smith’s presence will be much needed since Baylor only has two scholarship running backs on its roster in Terence Williams and JaMycal Hasty. Smith originally committed to Tulsa and had offers from Texas Tech and Army.
Smith was named the District 3-6A MVP as a senior as he rushed for 1,773 yards and 32 touchdowns on 215 carries. He also caught eight passes for 79 yards and one score.
In his high school career, Smith rushed for 4,373 yards and 60 touchdowns and caught 29 passes for 341 yards and three scores.
Smith is the fifth verbal commitment for coach Matt Rhule since the Bears’ 31-12 win over Boise State in the Cactus Bowl on Dec. 27.
