Five Baylor women's tennis players will compete today in the Waco Showdown $80K at the Hurd Tennis Center, including four in tonight's feature matches.
Senior Theresa Van Zyl will face top-seeded Taylor Townsend of Atlanta in opening-round singles play in the USTA Pro Circuit event. The match will begin no earlier than 4 p.m. on Stadium Court 2 and will be broadcast live on RadioTennis.com.
Beginning no earlier than 6 p.m., two BU doubles teams will compete in feature matches on Courts 1 and 2. Sophomores Jessica Hinojosa and Angie Shakhraichuk will face Sofia Kenin and Anastasiya Komardina on 1, while freshmen Kristina Sorokolet and Dominika Sujova meet fourth-seeded Usue Maitane Arconada and Maria Irigoyen on 2. Admission to all matches is free.
Townsend, who swept the singles and doubles titles in $25,000 events last month in Sumter and Florence, S.C., is ranked No. 105 in the world and played in the French and U.S. Opens this season, reaching the second round at Roland Garros. She is also the defending doubles champion in Waco, and has won doubles titles in three of her last four events, including last week's $80,000 RBC Pro Challenge in Tyler with partner Jessica Pegula.
Van Zyl, from Aroab, Namibia, earned her spot in the main draw by winning a qualifying tournament in September.
A free tennis clinic for children 14 and under will begin at 5 p.m. on the Riverside Courts behind the grandstand, conducted by touring pros, teaching professionals and Baylor staff. Tennis shoes are required, but all other equipment is provided.
