Theresa Van Zyl won the main draw singles championship at the H-E-B Invitational at Hurd Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Baylor senior faced Houston’s Tsveta Dimitrova and finished off the come-from-behind victory in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Van Zyl faced Baylor teammate sophomore Jessica Hinojosa in the semifinals where she won 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the final.
Earlier in Invitational, Van Zyl took on Stevie Kennedy (6-0, 6-2) of TCU, Isabel Iglesias from Kentucky, 6-2, 6-2, and Tyler’s Tamara Arnold, 6-2, 6-3. Van Zyl remains undefeated in singles action to kick off the fall season.
Hinojosa previously faced Tyler’s Oceane Garibal, 6-4, 6-3, and Mississippi State’s Magda Adaloglou, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
Another Lady Bear represented the program on the final day of the invitational. Sophomore Angelina Shakhraichuk competed in the consolation back draw and swept Houston’s Sveva Mazzari in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Bears are back in action at the ITA Texas Regionals in Fort Worth, Texas, from Oct. 13-16.
