Katie Staiger smacked a season-high 24 kills as the Baylor volleyball team defeated Texas State, 25-27, 25-10, 25-13, 25-21, on Friday night in the Jason’s Deli Baylor Classic.

Baylor (8-3) neutralized any hope of a Texas State win after the opening set by cranking up its defense at the net. The Bears finished with 12 blocks. Shelly Fanning had eight block assists and Staiger added six, while also helping out with 14 digs.

Fanning had 12 kills in 20 swings.

The Bobcats (8-4), who were led by Megan Porter’s 10 kills, put the Bears on their heels early by stealing the first set behind a .318 kill percentage. But Baylor rallied thereafter, thanks to its net play and service line efficiency. Staiger and Jana Brusek each tagged two aces.

Baylor will finish out the tournament with matches against St. John’s and UTSA on Saturday. UTSA defeated St. John’s, 3-2, in Friday’s other match.
