The Baylor volleyball team closed out preseason action with a dominating 3-0 win over Rice Thursday night at Tudor Fieldhouse, 25-21, 25-13, 25-15.
Led by redshirt senior Katie Staiger’s 16 kills, the Bears ran over the Owl defense with a .400 attack effort, which included six players hitting over .300.
Baylor held Rice to a .140 hitting clip, outdigging them 47-34 and doubling up the Owls 4.0-2.0 in blocks.
Baylor served up a 4-1 lead early in set one, but Rice came back to tie it up at 9-9 soon after. Fueling a key 4-0 run, an Aniah Philo service ace forced an Owl timeout en route to a 25-21 win.
Another Philo ace gave the Bears a 3-0 lead in the second frame, followed by a 6-0 run capped by a kill from Shelly Fanning. Camryn Freiberg ended the set with a kill down the middle, 25-13, to put the Bears up 2-0.
The momentum stayed on the Bears’ side in set three which started with three consecutive kills by Yossiana Presley. Tola Itiola put the Bears up 17-9, and a Rice service error gave BU the clean sweep.
