AUSTIN – Tiarra Davis threw a five-hitter as Texas knocked off No. 13 Baylor, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon to even the series at a game apiece.
Despite the loss, Baylor (40-11, 12-5) clinched the second seed in the Big 12 softball tournament May 12-13 in Oklahoma City after Oklahoma (17-1) beat Oklahoma State (12-6) Saturday afternoon.
The final regular season game between Baylor and Texas (30-21, 7-9) is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at McCombs Field in Austin.
The Lady Bears took the lead in the top of the fifth but failed to score again against Davis (8-8) who didn’t walk a batter and collected five strikeouts.
Lindsey Cargill broke up Davis’ no-hitter with a single to open the fifth before Maddison Kettler reached on an infield single. After Shelby McGlaun advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, Taylor Ellis drilled a run-scoring single up the middle to bring across Cargill.
Kettler also tried to score on the hit but centerfielder Stephanie Wong threw her out at home.
The Longhorns grabbed the lead with a three-run fifth inning against Baylor starter Gia Rodoni (14-2).
Jade Gortarez singled and moved to second on Davis’ ground out. Devon Tunning tied the game with a run-scoring single. After Kaitlyn Washington singled, Celina Felix ripped a two-run double to the left-field wall to give Texas a 3-1 lead.
Kelsee Selman came in to nail down the third out in the fifth inning after Rodoni allowed six hits in 4⅔ innings.
The Lady Bears tried to rally in the seventh as Shelby Friudenberg and Cargill opened the inning with singles. But Davis retired the final three Baylor hitters to end the threat.
