Baylor softball’s Whitney Canion has been named as one of nine nominees for the Big 12’s female Sportsperson of the Year award, the conference announced Tuesday.

The award recognizes student-athletes within the conference who have displayed an extraordinary amount of community service and academic achievement.

Canion, Baylor’s winningest pitcher in school history, was involved in a number of service projects, including Mission Waco’s Walk for the Homeless, Baylor’s canned food drive, Food for Families, and Operation Christmas Child. The four-time academic all-Big 12 honoree is scheduled to complete her master’s degree in August.

Other nominees were Iowa State’s Hallie Christofferson (basketball), Kansas’ Alex Jones (softball), Kansas State’s Chantay Caron (basketball), Oklahoma’s Taylor Spears (gymnastics), Oklahoma State’s Jenna Blumer (equestrian), TCU’s Alexi Child (equestrian), Texas Tech’s Minta Spears (basketball) and West Virginia’s Elizabeth Gulick (volleyball).

The men’s nominees will be named Wednesday, and the two winners will be revealed Thursday.
