Texas lawmakers offer Baylor an ally in realignment talks with Pac-10

If the Pac-10 expands, Texas legislators could put pressure on the league to invite Baylor among six Big 12 schools, a source told the Tribune-Herald Saturday night.

Orangebloods.com reported Saturday that a block of 15 legislators will work to make sure Baylor instead of Colorado is invited to the Pac-10 if the league expands. The website previously reported that the Pac-10 was prepared to invite Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado.

“If you’re going to have an exported commodity involved in this, do you think we’re going to allow a school outside the state of Texas to replace one of our schools in the Big 12 South?” a high-ranking member of the Texas Legislature who asked not to be identified told Orangebloods.com.

A source told the Tribune-Herald that the Pac-10 could have reservations about Colorado since it doesn’t field spring sports like baseball, softball and tennis.

Baylor officials have made it clear that they want the Big 12 to stay together. However, the Big Ten reportedly has interest in inviting Texas, Missouri and Nebraska.

The Big Ten has a TV package that includes its own cable network that pays each of its schools $20 million annually. An expanded Pac-10 could develop a similar cable TV package.

Meanwhile, the Pac-10 is holding its meetings this weekend in San Francisco where commissioner Larry Scott has reportedly laid out several scenarios for the future of the league.

They include inviting six Big 12 schools to join the Pac-10; forming a partnership with the entire Big 12; inviting Colorado and Utah; or staying pat with the the current Pac-10.

Scott is expected to address the media today after the conclusion of the Pac-10 meetings.

lololol Baylor is laughable. Listen, starting a huge home and home with UTSA is huge for ya'll. Cause if your not careful with larry coker - he'll end up taking all your half rate recruits. Take your 36 fans and all of your lobbyist friends and enjoy the riverwalk.Dont you wish you were sitting in TCU's spot now - oh the irony. By the way, isn't tcu 2 games from the college world series? You baylor fans should go to omaha to watch the frogs play - while your there drive around the midwest and get familiar with conference usa country. Thats where your headed...if your lucky.

This is all about money. I talked to a Texas Ex today who admited being prejudiced against Baylor. Then i kindly reminded him that even though Baylor doesnt have the record that Texas does, that Baylor doesnt have an endowment of 16 billion dollars either. Not to mention all the money texas gets from the state. I remember when Arkansas left the southwest Conference thinking they would be reaping all sorts of benefits. They lost and lost often for years. Texas wont be playing baylor, and every week will be a killer game. As the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

Don't congressmen have something better to do than listen to Baylor whine because schools that actually bring something to the table want to be in a different conference???? These schools that are leaving bring in up to 100,000 for a football game while Baylor brings in half that ONLY when the Ag's or Horns come to town....

Not so fast my friends. Baylor serves many purposes for the Horns and Aggies. First, they are within driving distance to both schools. Second, they offer easy victories almost every year. Remember that being in a conference means that ALL SPORTS are in. That means football, baseball, softball, soccer, etc. If I'm Texas or A&M I'd much rather drive to Waco in the middle of the week than fly to CU. HUGE DIFFERENCE IN TRAVEL COSTS both in terms of money and toll on student athletes. Being able to count Baylor as a win each year is good as well. In football, which is driving this expansion talk, Baylor rarely beats the Horns or Aggies. Why would they trade out this game for a team that is likely to beat them more than 2 times every 25 years? In reality, the idea of a Pac-16 won't work. It's much too far flung. But if this idea is to seriously be considered, the Horns and Aggies need to weigh in and get every advantage they can. And it is to both school's advantage to have Baylor included.

Saying that Baylor brings more to the table than Stanford is laughable. Stanford wins the Directors Cup every year due to their strong spring sports. Their althetic program is a national juggernaut. The Pac-10 doesn't need Baylor for any media markets, by getting Texas, Texas Tech and Texas ATM, they get DFW, Houston, Austin and San Antonio markets. Let's see, the Denver market vs the Waco market...that's a tough one. Academically/research, Baylor isn't in the same breath with Texas and Texas ATM. It's about time they found a conf worthy of what they offer like Conf USA or the Sunbelt.

I agree with Husker4Life; this was all started yrs ago with disproportionate "members" and culminated with Weiberg's resignation. We're now 'led' by a figurehead who fiddles while Rome burns. It would be best to copy the model used in all other conferences. It would be best for Nebraska and Missouri to say "We are committed to the Big XII, so long as we all share all revenue equally and "there are to be no carve-outs" for sports content for one member school. That would make for a healthy Big XII.

Baylor, like water, will find it's level. A reunion with old rivals Houston,Rice & SMU awaits the Bears. But let's not forget about UTEP, yessir! Baylor finally makes it to the Sun Bowl. You see, if it's Texas schools you want, it's Texas schools you will get (albeit in Conference USA) Boy Howdy! it doesn't get any better than that!

So now Texas or the state of Texas is telling the Pac 10 how their conferance is to be run. Sound familiar. I personally would like to to see the Big XII survive but I dont blame Nebraska and Mizzou for leaving the Big XII for the Big 10. Due the math 22million vs 7mil per team for the respective conferances. What the hell has the Big XII been doing while the B10 has had their own network for 3 plus years? A network should have been ready to go once exsisting packages expired. The talk up here is that Texas wants their own network where they don't have to share any revenue with the B12. These actions seem to stymie a potential B12 network shared equally by all equally in the B12. Big Ten, Pac 10,SEC, share revenues equally. Whether your Ohio ST. or Northwestern; you get and egual share. The B12 does not share revenue equally. Nebraska is in no way a poor sister in the Big 12 like ISU, KU,KSU,CU, Baylor,TT,etc. Nebraska doesn't have to kiss any postierer to a certain team in the Big 12 South. Nebraska wants peace with no North-South politics. You dont here of these types of things happening in the other major conferances. Texas wants its own network and not a Big12 network to be shared evenly. Yet they say their commited to the survival of the B12. If Texas ends up in the SEC,Pac10 etc, they wont be able to have their own network. This is all about money, greed, and power. Nebraska and Missouri will bolt if the B10 comes calling and look to be treated equally and leave the politics behind

So the PAC-10 does not want Baylor what a joke. Baylor has a larger enrollment then Stanford and the majority of their Alumni live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I wounder which area has better viewing area Dallas/Fort Worth or the Bay Area! Take Baylor and leave Colorado!

in response to the attacks on Baylors education and culture Baylor is matched only by rice In it's pre-med program in Texas. CU considtantly ranks in the top 3 party schools. Religion has nothing to do with football. The fact that CU brings nothing to the table in spring sports as well as Baylor has considtantly beaten them recently makes them a poor choice.

The Pac wants CU, not Baylor. CU has the cultural feel of a Pac10 school. Large, public, a member of the AAU, etc. Additionally, Baylor doesn't even come close to matching CU in terms of football tradition. Sure, CU has struggled the last couple seasons, but Baylor has struggled for the past 15. A few state lawmakers don't have the leverage to get Baylor included. Baylor got lucky to be included in the Big12, and that won't happen with the Pac (Do you really think Stanford and Cal are going to let a Baptist school into their conference?). CU is the better option for so many reasons.

Academics are "middle of the road?" Check your facts. That said, academics among athletes is essentially a fiction when the real factor, money, drives the process. The term "student/athlete" is a misnomer in, not all, but many cases. When greed drives the machinery, and the regulatory agency (NCAA) depends upon the television revenues for its existence, diminishing its effectiveness, if not emasculating it, then the purpose of intercollegiate sports is sold out. The shame is not in the interjection of the political process alone. Our mistake is partly in complaining about THAT aspect while validating the avarice that allows the media and tax-funded schools and programs to ride "rough-shod" over the honorable nature of college sports.

Baylor is getting ready to find out what everyone else in the country already knows. They bring nothing to the table.....academics are middle of the road, along with research money brought in......they add nothing in bringing in the texas market, besides waco........baylor's membership in the big 12 is due to politics, and this time the mistake of letting them in, won't happen again.
