G A.J. Walton Fr 6-1 3.8 2.3 39 steals
Scouting report: After gritting out their first two NCAA tournament victories in 60 years last week to reach the first Sweet 16 in program history, the Bears meet their third straight opponent seeded in double digits. Baylor’s size and length with Ekpe Udoh, Josh Lomers and Anthony Jones along the baseline in its 2-3 zone will be called upon to shut down Saint Mary’s center Omar Samhan, who has emerged as one of the stars of the tournament. Offensively, double-figure scorers outside in LaceDarius Dunn and Tweety Carter balance the Bears’ inside attack, led by Udoh. Sixth man Quincy Acy often provides a spark offensively when he comes off the bench.
#10 Saint Mary’s Gaels
Coach: Randy Bennett (155-97 in nine seasons)
Record: 28-5 (11-3, 2nd in West Coast Conference)
How they reached Sweet 16: Defeated seventh-seeded Richmond, 80-71, and second-seeded Villanova, 75-68, in Providence, R.I.
Record vs. 2010 NCAA tournament teams: 4-3
All-time NCAA tournament record: 3-5
Starting lineup
Pos Name Cl Ht Pts Reb Notable
G Matt Dellavedova Fr 6-4 12.3 3.5 4.4 assists
F Clint Steindl So 6-7 7.0 2.6 81.3 FT%
F Ben Allen Sr 6-11 10.5 7.6 48.7 FG%
G Mickey McConnell Jr 6-0 14.0 2.4 5.2 assists
C Omar Samhan Sr 6-11 21.5 10.9 2.9 blocks
Top reserves
F Mitchell Young Fr 6-8 4.1 2.9 22 blocks
G Jordan Page Fr 6-1 3.8 1.0 35.2 3-pt%
Scouting report: With four starters who average double-digit scoring, the Gaels are as potent outside as they are inside. Center Omar Samhan, who has scored 30-plus points four times this season, receives most of the accolades, thanks in large part to possessing a double-double average and a personality to match his size and ability. But point guard Mickey McConnell is the team’s pace-setter and creator, dishing out 5.2 assists per game. Saint Mary’s isn’t known to play at a high rate of speed, but is 19-0 this season when scoring 70 points or more.
#1 Duke Blue Devils
Coach: Mike Krzyzewski (791-220 in 30 seasons)
Record: 31-5 (13-3, T-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference)
How they reached Sweet 16: Defeated 16th-seeded Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 73-44, and eighth-seeded California, 68-53, in Jacksonville, Fla.
Record vs. 2010 NCAA tournament teams: 10-4
All-time NCAA tournament record: 90-30
Starting lineup
Pos Name Cl Ht Pts Reb Notable
G Nolan Smith Jr 6-2 17.2 2.8 2.9 assists
F Kyle Singler Jr 6-8 17.7 7.0 39.3 3-pt%
G Jon Scheyer Sr 6-5 18.1 3.5 4.9 assists
F Lance Thomas Sr 6-8 4.9 4.8 75.0 FT%
C Brian Zoubek Sr 7-1 5.6 7.4 64.3 FG%
Top reserves
F Mason Plumlee Fr 6-10 4.0 3.3 29 blocks
F Miles Plumlee So 6-10 5.4 4.9 57.2 FG%
Scouting report: The winningest program of all-time in the NCAA tournament, Duke is in the Sweet 16 for the 11th time in the last 13 seasons. However, the Blue Devils haven’t advanced past this round since 2004, when they reached their last Final Four. Duke is paced offensively by guards Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith, and swingman Kyle Singler, all of whom score better than 17 points per game, but is also better equipped than in recent years to match up inside with 7-foot-1 Brian Zoubek and Lance Thomas, along with the Plumlee brothers off the bench. The Blue Devils shoot 38 percent as a team from 3-point range.
#4 Purdue Boilermakers
Coach: Matt Painter (137-60 in five seasons)
Record: 29-5 (14-4, T-1 Big Ten)
How they reached Sweet 16: Defeated 13th-seeded Siena, 72-64, and fifth-seeded Texas A&M, 63-61 in OT, in Spokane, Wash.
Record vs. 2010 NCAA tournament teams: 8-3
All-time NCAA tournament record: 33-23
Starting lineup
Pos Name Cl Ht Pts Reb Notable
C JuJuan Johnson Jr 6-10 15.3 7.2 68 blocks
G Keaton Grant Sr 6-4 6.6 2.8 28.7 3-pt%
G Chris Kramer Sr 6-3 6.7 3.0 59 steals
G Lewis Jackson So 5-9 2.6 2.6 3.4 assists
G E’Twaun Moore Jr 6-4 16.4 3.8 92 assists
Top reserves
G Kelsey Barlow Fr 6-5 3.4 2.2 56 assists
G Ryne Smith So 6-3 2.7 1.0 11-11 FTs
Scouting report: The Boilermakers looked like a national championship contender until All-America candidate Robbie Hummel went down with a season-ending knee injury in late February. Still, Purdue’s lockdown perimeter defense, led by the school’s all-time steals leader, Chris Kramer, has been the catalyst to the Boilermakers returning to the Sweet 16 for the second straight season. Purdue’s guard-oriented lineup puts pressure on the opposition to turn the ball over, which fuels its offense. JuJuan Johnson gives the Boilermakers a formidable inside presence on both ends of the floor, while E’Twaun Moore, their leading scorer, is adept in creating shots from himself and his teammates.
