John Werner: Baylor staying in Big 12 a cause for celebration

Baylor coach Art Briles summed up the joy he was feeling in seven words: “It’s like we’ve been given new life.”

Briles was talking about his football program, but his words could stand for the entire Baylor athletic department after the Big 12 decided to stick together with 10 teams.

Just a few days ago, it looked like Baylor would be lost in the wilderness as Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott tried to lure Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

With almost no chance of landing in a major conference, the Bears faced the gloomy prospect of scrambling to play in a less prestigious or profitable conference.

The consequences could have been devastating.

What would happen to the dynamic all-around program that Baylor had built under athletic director Ian McCaw? Could Baylor afford to keep Briles and basketball coaches Scott Drew and Kim Mulkey? What would happen to recruiting without the Big 12 in the picture?

Lucrative prospects

Now, Baylor doesn’t have to worry about any of those scenarios.

Baylor’s prospects look better than ever with a new Big 12 television contract on the horizon. Baylor could pull in $14 to $17 million annually beginning in 2012, and more than double its current television revenue.

“This is a win for Baylor in a lot of ways,” McCaw said. “We’re going to benefit financially, and maintain the tradition we’ve built with our Texas rivals. I’m just grateful for the humble support of the entire Baylor family through such an anxious time.”

While there have been rumors of Big Ten expansion all along, nobody saw the West Coast attack coming. Briles didn’t hear a lot about a major expansion threat during the Big 12’s spring meetings.

“Nobody saw anything of this magnitude coming,” Briles said.

During the past week, Briles tried to preoccupy himself with his football camps for high school players. But how could he shield himself from the rumors of a Big 12 breakup? It was all over the newspapers, television and Internet. It’s all anybody interested in college athletics has talked about for the last two weeks.

Seizing a second chance

Major relief wouldn’t even describe how Briles felt after word began filtering out Monday night that the Big 12 was sticking together. Now, Briles is re-energized, and he’s not the only Baylor coach who feels that way.

“This has been eye-opening, and we’d better be proactive and do our best every day,” Briles said. “We’ve landed on our feet when we had a chance to stumble. We’ve got to understand the opportunity that has been given us, and take full advantage of it.”

Briles sounded like a guy who can’t wait to get on the football field for August two-a-days. You can bet Mulkey and Drew can’t wait for fall basketball workouts to begin.

Both the Big 12 men’s and women’s basketball leagues were top-ranked in the country last year. The men’s league is going to be even better in future years without weak links Nebraska and Colorado.

“We’ll have 10 great teams,” Drew said. “That’s going to make the rivalries grow even more.”

Baylor is coming off perhaps the greatest spring in school history with the women’s basketball team reaching the Final Four, the men’s basketball team making the Elite Eight, and both the men’s and women’s tennis teams advancing to the final eight. The men’s golf team completed a tremendous year in the national tournament.

Without the Big 12 as a recruiting base, it would have been hard for Baylor to duplicate such success again.

“The Big 12 is one of Baylor’s greatest assets,” McCaw said. “Sometimes, you don’t appreciate it until it’s almost gone. This is a wakeup call.”

After a nightmarish few days, isn’t it great to wake up in the Big 12?

Like Coach Briles said, this is a wake up call. Baylor needs to win football games and do it consistently. When we win, they (BaylorFans) will come. Look at the Elite Eight game as proof. We have been complacent and accepted mediocrity for years. No wonder we have small attendance to games and people say we can not compete in the Big 12. That's what was said about our basketball teams - men's and women's - until winning took care of all. Every team in this great conference would have poor attendance and low value to tv networks with the product we have put on the football field since the conference's inception. Ian has some decisions to make regarding acceptable levels of time for mediocrity to exist before change occurs and not just in football. We must win.

Funny how there’s dancin in the streets of Waco (forget Baptist code) and cryin on the streets of Lubbock and Stillwater. I guess it all depends on where Baylor, Ok St, and Tech stood on Saturday. Bears were HOPING to get accepted by the Mountain West (in spite of TCU), while Tech and Ok State were gonna be on somewhat equal footing with mighty Texas in a new superconference. Even though we all will improve our annual TV revenue, it reminds me of how the U.S. viewed that soccer tie as a win while England felt like it was a loss. You gotta give credit to A&M and Oklahoma. They leveraged their flirting with the SEC into a bigger piece of the pie. We all knew Texas could get whatever they wanted, but I didn’t expect it from the other 2. I guess we all see the writing on the wall. Art Briles needs to find a way to make Baylor relevant in football (tall order). When the next round of realignment happens (likely soon), Baylor needs to be a lot prettier and MUCH more prepared (see Colorado). Ditto Texas Tech and Ok State. The big boys held all the power this round, and that power’s only gonna become greater given their increased annual revenue and UT’s imminent TV network. Texas might just become independent in a few years while the other two take off to the SEC... after Missouri’s expected departure to the BIG 10.

How can this be a cause for celebration when Baylor will continued to get flogged? Why can't we be in a conference where we can win a game once in a while?

I bleed green and gold, but unfortunately so will Baylor, through the nose, for the next 10 years or until the league collapses, whichever comes first.

NCAA says Colleges and Universities are about Education. Now, We see it is ALL about the M O N E Y !!! All schools can NOT be Big schools,so they all have to play each other. Baylor has the smallest enrollment in the Big 12 (10).The overall Baylor program has done very well and Baylor is in the middle of the pack. Finally look at the high school signees in February, Texas, Texas A. & M. , Oklahoma signs 90 % per cent of the area high school Stars, and They Don't win the National Championship each year.Finall, how did the PAC 10 expect Fans to stay loyal to these school, like O U, fans drive to Waco, Dallas and the like. Other school do the same. So, how was the 5 schools from this area going to follow them to games on the West Coast. Most would see their Home games and that would be all, except what would be on T V.

"weak links?" I came to the BU-NU football game last year. Your stadium wasn't even 1/2 full!!!...there were more Nebraska fans than bear fans in the stands. If you really deserve to be in a BCS conference, than you have to get your football team up to speed. Double your efforts recruiting...sell your academics. (my son attends). Lastly, you sold your souls to UT, OU, and A&M. When is Baylor going to stand up nose to nose with UT and stop letting them run rough shod over you?

BU faithful do celebrate, however, Baylor must take care of business and play the kind of successful football that will answer problems down the road. More wins on the field will eventually put more fans in the stands. Coach Briles and his staff, more so than ever before, have greater pressure on them to win. They must see that the Bears do win and challenge all competition, along with recruiting the very best athletes.

Jeremy, You're wrong. You read and listen to way too much gossip from negative nut cases who actually think Baylor had a better way to go. The BIG 12 package could have been better...and worse. You are among those who may think they are friends of Baylor...but you and the negativists you run with are the most pervasive of enemies....But you are probably a Horn or Aggie or maybe even a Sooner anyway...and that's why no real Baylor supporter will pay any attention to you...anyway!

Baylor guaranteed UTaustin, Tamu, and OU together anywhere between $70-$150 million more than the rest of the conference combined over the next 10 years, plus forfeited rights to the exit fees of CU and NE, and John Werner thinks this is cause for celebration? Baylor has a strange group of so-called friends and supporters.

Baylor needs to keep finger on pulse of big 12 and what the commissioner, etc is doing. There livelyhood depends on decisions made from here forward. There will be issues again and someone better insure that the league is being proactive. Keeping big 12 together is baylor's only hope of remaining in a major conference.
