Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe is making an 11th-hour pitch with a lucrative television package that he hopes can save the conference.
Under the plan, the remaining 10 Big 12 schools would receive an average of $17 million annually from television deals beginning in 2012.
The revenue would be similar to what Southeastern Conference teams are making and considerably higher than the $7 million to $11 million that Big 12 teams currently receive.

“We have pretty good evidence that if our 10 institutions remain, we have more value with 10 than the 11 in the Pac-10,” Dan Beebe said.

Additionally, the plan gives each school the opportunity to create its own television network.
The University of Texas has been interested in starting its own network, which reportedly could bring in at least $3 million to $5 million annually.
The Pac-10 is wooing Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State with a possible $20 million annual package that would include a conference television network.
For Texas, creating its own network could be a major selling point for the Big 12’s cause.
If Texas agrees to Beebe’s proposal, the Big 12 likely would stay together. Texas has scheduled a board of regents meeting Tuesday to discuss expansion.
“We have pretty good evidence that if our 10 institutions remain, we have more value with 10 than the 11 in the Pac-10,” Beebe said. “We can compete well with our value compared to any conference in the country if we just hold it together.”
Additionally, the Big 12 is expected to receive $32 million in buyout fees from Nebraska and Colorado.
If the Big 12 stays intact with 10 teams, the league plans to play a nine-game conference football schedule and an 18-game basketball schedule.
Nebraska will leave for the Big Ten after the 2010-11 season, while Colorado will leave for the Pac-10 after the 2011-12 season.
“I’m more encouraged than I was a couple of days ago with keeping the Big 12’s 10-team model,” Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw said.
While Beebe was pitching his plan, Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott has been meeting with officials from the Big 12 schools that he is pursuing.
Scott met with Texas A&M officials Sunday, but reports have indicated the Aggies are leaning toward jumping to the SEC if the Big 12 falls apart.
Should five more teams leave the Big 12, the remaining five schools are looking at options to keep the league alive.
Officials from Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri and Iowa State held a conference call Saturday to talk about adding teams to maintain the Big 12’s Bowl Championship Series automatic qualifier status for football.
There have been discussions between Big 12 and Mountain West Conference representatives about a possible scenario in which the 10 Mountain West teams join the remaining five Big 12 teams in 2012.
The MWC is seeking automatic BCS qualifier status but won’t be eligible until 2013. But by joining the Big 12, the MWC teams could be immediately eligible for the BCS in 2012.
The MWC includes strong football programs, such as TCU, Utah and BYU, and recently added Boise State.
Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane, a former chairman of the Baylor board of regents, said Sunday it’s important to preserve the Big 12.
“Keeping the Big 12 together is in the best interest of the universities and the people who live here,” McLane said. “As a businessman, I’ve seen how powerful of an impact the Big 12 has made. The Texas teams have built traditions and rivalries for over 100 years, and we need to preserve them.”
He also urged the Texas and Texas A&M boards of regents to take their time before making a decision about switching.
McLane said there needs to be more public discussion on the issues of expansion.
“I’d like to slow down the process and have much better debate,” he said. “We need to get a better grasp of the issues and not just make a quick decision in a few days.
“I’ve had conversations with people at Texas and Texas A&M, and they’re amazed how quickly this has occurred and understand how important the stakes are.”

MORE IN BAYLOR BEARS SPORTS »
Bob, You keep saying "games." It was one game. Yes, last year's BU/Tech game at Cowboys Stadium was supposed to be in Waco. This year's BU/Tech game at the Cotton Bowl would've been in Lubbock...not Waco.
The point of the games being moved from waco was the take away from the local economy IN WACO, no waco business cares if it is in dallas, lubbock, tulsa,or el paso. THE POINT is that the games arent in waco anymore and that takes money out of local business!
Those who referring to the "2 games moved to Dallas"...the upcoming BU/Tech game at the Cotton Bowl would've been played in Lubbock.
I grew up in the Waco area and our family had season tickets to Baylor games from the 80s to the present. Baylor students do go to the game and many stay but by the end of the third quarter the press box side is empty, and you can sit just about anywhere you want. We used to joke after the "Goldern Wave" marches its time to go. They stopped letting people sit in the south endzone and painted Baylor on the seats so the stadium would look more full for televised games. Plus they give away more tickets to high schools and do more ticket give aways to fill seats then probably any other Big 12 team.
Come on don't focus on the Texas teams rivalry, have you not seen any KSU vs KU games or KU vs. MU what about that history people!!!
and whoever said BU students do not attend the home games is just plain wrong.....if you dont like baylor - or you want to see the big 12 dissolved - or just want baylor kicked out of the big 12 or left behind...thats your right to feeel that way. but dont just make stuff up that isnt true....
didnt UT play a game in Dallas last year? and OU played 2 games in Dallas last year? and Tex Tech played a game in Dallas last year....why all the griping about Baylor? BU is not a ftball power - but they are competitive in all other sports....and lets face it - while some of the teams have had passing success in ftball the last few years, it isnt like tech, or okla st. or even the mighty a&m is ever gonna replace texas/oklahoma as the team to beat EVERY year in the big 12....period!!! UT and OU - like it or not - are the kings of the conference....
Well you must have been to a bad game because I have been to plenty of home games where the kids are absolute fanitics worse that the U.T. side. Wigs, paint the whole bit and they stayed STANDING ALMOST THE WHOLE GAME... NOT SURE WHAT YOU ARE SEEING ON TV.
First and foremost Baylor needs not to have any home games televised! When on TV the people do not show up in the stands even more!! Older money Alumni are the true backbone of attendance on the pressbox side. I watch as the students pour in to run on the field at the start only to see a trail of yellow shirts heading to George's Beer Tent instead of staying at the game. If you can't keep your students into the game how do you expect Wacko to support ya!!!!
Good point about Baylor moving games to the DFW area. I wonder whether Waco's economy have been better served by playing the likes of TCU, SMU, or Houston rather than Iowa State, Missouri, or the Kansas teams. Surely the Texas teams sent more fans to Waco than those non-Texas teams. Let's see some charts and graphs on the numbers, Waco-Trib : )
Those away fans that would have come to Waco for the game will no longer be spending money on hotels, food, and shopping. Also waco fans wont be eating in Waco or going out on the town after the game which equals loss of profits for Waco businesses.
DOllar Bill- Explain to me how that move hurt the Waco Economy. Baylor was desperate to make money from football. Its Waco's fault they were forced to make such a decision. When no one fills the seats, you have to bring the game to somewhere where they will. Its fans who caused the game to be moved, not Baylor.
Baylor has already hurt the Waco economy when it moved 2 games to Dallas. No wonder Waco doesnt support Baylor, that was a slap to the face and a huge blow to the local economy.
it's all about money and i understand that. has anyone taken into consideration the impact that this change will have on the student athletes? imagine going from OU, Texas, Texas Tech to play Washington and then back home for class? will there be more concessions made for student athletes on missing school? how good can this be for the student athletes academically? They already miss alot of school. this will only make it harder on them.
What bright side your complaining about games being moved from Waco to Dallas, try moving them from Dallas to the west coast. The PAC10 are trying to give them a sizeable TV deal, because its the only way fans and alums are going to be able to see their schools play...This is a crazy move, especially since the BIG12 is a very strong conference, the PAC10 is not. The only standout team in the PAC10 is USC, and with thier recruiting violations they will not be good for a few more years..we are talking about disassembling 100+ year rivalrys, it would be crazy to not see OU/Texas, OU/OSU, Texas/Texas Tech, Texas/Aggies game every year, but if they allow this to happen those will be things of the past =(
This is to important a decision to rush into. Listen to those calling for full and thoughtful examination of the problem. The legislature may not have a lot of influence on what the governing bodies decide. Those bodies need to keep in mind the legislature can have a lot to say about the consequences of their decisions.
Its funny how we can only comment on the Big 12 stories. How come no one complained when Baylor decided to move a few of the big games to Dallas? We keep hearing how the big 12 disolving will hurt the Waco economy...didnt Baylor start that trend by moving games out of Waco? By doing that they took away people that would be staying in waco hotels, eating at waco shops, and shopping at waco stores. But, its still sad the trib is only allowing commenting when it involves Baylor. Kinda weird and fishy if you ask me. WHy dont we look at this as a "new birth" instead of armaggedon???Look on the bright side like Christ would want.
