Baylor, others discussing future of Big 12 even if Pac-10 exodus occurs
By John Werner Tribune-Herald staff writer
If teams bolt from the Big 12 during the next several days, Baylor University and the other four remaining schools are discussing plans to keep the league together.
Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw said he discussed that option with officials from Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Missouri in a conference call Saturday.
The five remaining Big 12 schools would look to add teams from other conferences.

Baylor President Ken Starr (right) and athletic director Ian McCaw and said in a press conference Friday that they will work around the clock to preserve the Big 12 with its remaining 10 members.

“We’re still working to keep the remaining 10 Big 12 teams together,” McCaw said. “But if there are additional defections, our preference is to keep our core group of five and add additional teams.”
By keeping the remaining Big 12 teams together, the league could retain its automatic Bowl Championship Series qualifier status.
Also Saturday, state Rep. Charles “Doc” Anderson, R-Waco, asked officials at Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech to delay any decisions regarding conference alignment until state legislators weighed in on the topic.
On Friday, Anderson hailed the fact that House leaders had scheduled a hearing for Wednesday on the potential breakup of the conference.
If the Big 12 doesn’t stay together, the Mountain West Conference might be Baylor’s best option. A source told the Tribune-Herald that the Mountain West is interested in Baylor despite a report in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that said TCU would lobby against Baylor to join the league.
McCaw said there is no friction between Baylor and TCU officials.
“I’m confident that if there is a desire for Baylor and TCU to be in the same league, there would be no impediment,” McCaw said.
The Big 12 could be down to seven teams after Tuesday, when the University of Texas’ board of regents meeting. Reports have indicated Texas is expected to jump to the Pac-10 along with Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Texas A&M could also move to the Pac-10, but is strongly considering the SEC.
In other developments, a source said Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott flew to Oklahoma on Saturday to meet with officials at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. He also met with Texas Tech officials and is expected to meet with Texas and Texas A&M officials today.
A University of Oklahoma spokesman said the school’s regents would meet Wednesday.
The SEC also is courting Oklahoma.
“There’s still a lot of conversation going on,” McCaw said. “But I still have a glimmer of hope that we can keep the 10 remaining Big 12 teams together.”
Anderson said the scheduled hearing “gives the people of Texas an opportunity to be represented on this very important issue.”
But questions arose about the effectiveness of the hearing because of its timing.
The meeting is scheduled the day after separate meetings of the regents at Texas and Texas Tech. Reports have suggested the two schools could announce defections from the conference.
“I respectfully request that you postpone any decisions on athletic conference alignment until legislators have had a chance to meet on this issue,” Anderson wrote in a letter to the regents and chancellors of Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
“Our constituents have made it clear that they expect us to work together with you in order to preserve the historical alliances which remain for Texas universities,” he wrote.
Waco state Rep. Jim Dunnam said Friday he hoped the legislative hearing would be organized to affect the ongoing conference discussions and “not just to provide cover after the universities’ meetings Tuesday.”
Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said Saturday the school is still “looking at all options.”

JB thats the problem the town has low wages and cannot support baylor i for one have been calling out dunnam and edwards to put pressuer on city concil to cut out the property tax hikes and bring in other revenue scorces baylor should be supported by the community not the other way around thats why i want them to have to be independant for a while
there is no loyalty between the remaining 5 lol
Maybe all those locals who've never supported Baylor will find out what it's like without all the income/business Baylor brings to town, not just for football, but for other sports, as well.
Why don't all the local rabid UT fans put some pressure on the university to not turn traitor for a few dollars. UT might find it's not to their benefit, after all. Same for A&M. Another Arkansas-like defection, and who's heard much of them since?
A merger of the remaining 5 teams of the Big12, the 8 football teams of the BigEAST and Memphis of the ConfUSA to add a balancing 14th team. Plus, FedEX offer a $10 million sponsorship incentives to any BCS conference that adds the Tigers. Big EAST is a BCS League. WEST - Kansas, K-State, Mizzou, Iowa St, Baylor, Memphis, Louisville EAST - Cincy, Pitt, West VA, Rutgers, Syracuse, USF, UConn BASKETBALL ONLY: Georgetown & Villanova Do you call the Big14plus or Big16Lite?
baylor should be thankful the big four is leaving, then maybe they will actually win a few come football season. This conference shake up is all about football and money and your kidding yourself if you think baylor is relevant in where they or other schools end up. Leave the big boy talk to the schools that matter
Hey Creative 1: Just b/c you are from Cornell does not an expert make you. If you want to see real back-biting go to the Chapel Hill or Durham news and see the insanity b/w UNC and Duke. UT/ATM can't even match that one.
As an outsider... (Live in NY,grad from Cornell) I just wanted to see what all the excitement was about so I logged on... Do you realize how petty this all looks??? The backbiting form various Big 12 schools... Texas vs. Baylor, TCU Versus baylor, Iowa State versus Nebraska... Face it folks... Athletic programs do what is in THEIR best interest.... From what I have read about Baylor in the past few days thats what happened with Baylor and TCU when the Big 12 formed in the 90s... Unfortunately for Baylor it now loks like you will be on the outside looking in....
Why doesn't the Big12 try to do this? Let only ONE of these leave Texas, Oklahoma or Texas A&M. While letting ONLY ONE of these leave try to bring in USC, Ohio State, TCU and possibly Michigan or Hawaii to come to the Big12. That way you will be replacing those that leave and still be the powerhouse along with the money that the ones that left were hoping to get. Then you could see if the Pac10 and Big10 could hang with the Big12. Then get exclusive rights to FoxSports for coverage of the games, so that ESPN and the others that keep trying to get all the big money from the sales would maybe keep their noses out of breaking up conferences because they would loose so much money to the Big12's exclusive rights to FoxSports.
yeah tex ex 00 lets do the math: West Coast economies...billion dollar windfall. Texas economy...billion dollar loss. This is stupid and another example of greed and where that is taking this country. Oh well, at least I have the SEC and LSU to look forward to. They may be the only decent football conference left after this.
I saw Quincy Acy yesterday dunking a burnt orange b-ball in a pick up game. The impressive part was that all of UT's 2010 starters were on the court against him 5 on 1. Rick Barnes may be the only one happy about this move. Wups, Dunn replaces Acy and just hit a 3-ball and Perry Jones just went in for Dunn and drove the length of the court and mistook J'Covan Brown's head for a basketball and ripped it off and dunked it too. Current Score: BU one man team 66 - UT 2010 all 5 starters nil.
If I remember correctly the big scandal with the SMU football program and being hit with the death penalty in the late 80's had quite a bit to do with the break up of the old SWC.
Let's do the math, Texas is #1 in their sports making money and Nebraska is #4 in the Nation. But Texas didn't want to sign media rights over like Nebraska was willing to do. But the cost of an education at UT continues to go UP at a higher rate than the rest of the BIG 12. Glad, I am done peying for my education.
Wow, the news is on the street, one of the teams (TEXAS) trying to keep Nebraska and Colorado in the Big 12 contacted 3 other conferences about leaving the conference.
"Arent you guys tired of Texas whipping Baylor on the football field 95% of the time??" Quincy Acy just dunked on the Longhorns again.
Let's not forget about the big picture here, The state of Texas, a football powerhouse, heck, movies and television series have been based on the state. If the Big 12 dissolves we will not have a nationally recognized representative in the BCS, Now that's a travesty! How can I as a Texan have pride in following my university knowing they represent the Pacific Coast! Come on BIG 12 stand up and fight back!!!
A simple way to stop this money grab! All money from tv sportcast will now be given to the players whos sweat and time is being used for profit by schools!!!!
Too bad UT refused to sign over their media rights to the Big 12. If they had, it would've signaled their commitment to the other Big 12 schools. Texas wants to have its cake and eat it too. So much for "doing everything they could to keep the Big 12 together."
Just imagine the tv viewing audience for Texas Tech v. Cal and Oklahoma State v. Oregon State at 10p.m. Mind boggling...
Instead of perpetuating the opinion that Texas is the villain in all of this... -The Big 10 initiated discussions Dec. 2009 -At the the Big XII meetings, Nebraska & Mizzou refused to commit to the conference thinking they were on the Big 10 radar... Bad poker hand for Mizzou... -The revenue sharing agreement implemented at the beginning of the Big XII encourages memeber institutions to invest in the development of their programs as the conference does not have authority to mandate any required development. This revenue sharing agreementis supported by Joe Castigione who is the current Athletic Director at Oklahoma and was the AD at Missouri when the Big XII conference was formed. An outstanding article in the St. Louis Today newspaper... http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/stories.nsf/mizzou/story/37140DC135C7B679862577410006983C?OpenDocument

Beebe weak.....McCaw weaker......Bears chances?....Not Good
Whew, its all about TV money, and yes, the Horns and USC started all this maddness back in the 80's. So, a new SWC? Baylor, Texas, A+M, Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, and Houston. Maybe bring Arkansas back home? Works for me.
Once again those sorry longhorns mess up another conf. Just like they broke up the SWC.
