Baylor soccer overwhelms UT-San Antonio, 4-0
By Chelsea Quackenbush Tribune-Herald staff writer
The Baylor soccer team registered season highs for shots on goal and total shots Friday night in a 4-0 victory over UT-San Antonio at Betty Lou Mays Field.
The Bears had 34 shots, including 20 on goal, to stay unbeaten at home and improve to 4-1 overall.
Baylor scored within the first three minutes of taking the pitch.
After a series of passes up the field, sophomore midfielder Hanna Gilmore scored on a shot to the far post off an assist from sophomore forward Dana Larsen.
UTSA (3-2) seemed stunned after such a quick goal at the beginning, and the Bears used that to their advantage as they powered through the first half, charging every defender and chasing every loose ball.
The majority of play stayed on UTSA’s half throughout the game.
In the second half, the Bears’ shots began finding the range. Within the first two minutes, sophomore midfielder Lisa Sliwinski took an assist from senior forward Lotto Smith, sliding the ball along the side of the net past UTSA goalkeeper Dacia Webb for a 2-0 Baylor lead.
Less than five minutes later, another assist from Smith on the cross led to junior midfielder Brittany Hunemuller’s first goal this season to give the Bears a 3-0 cushion.
Baylor’s final goal came at the 69-minute mark when junior forward Christine Clark crossed the ball to junior midfielder Bethany Johnston, who beat the keeper near the post from the 8-yard line for her first goal of the season.
“I was a little nervous” before the game, Baylor coach Marci Jobson said. “We struggled with them last year. But we had a good week of training, tried some new things and it paid off.”
The Bears will next host Houston (4-0-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday.
