Baugh tops high school football HOF class
Former NFL legend Sammy Baugh highlights the latest nine-member induction class to the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame.
Baugh, who died in 2008, set 13 NFL records at three positions — quarterback, punter and defensive back. He was also a two-time All-American at TCU following his high school days at Sweetwater.
Joining Baugh, the pre-1949 inductee, in the Hall of Fame will be Huntsville’s Joe Clements (1950s), Denver City brother tandem Bert and Bill Gravitt (1960s), San Antonio Jay’s Thomas Lott (1970s), Houston Robert E. Lee’s Peter Gardere (1980s) and Mission’s Koy Detmer (1990s).
Additionally, Theo “Cotton” Miles of White Oak High School will be enshrined in the coaching category and Dr. Mark Bing, a team doctor at Katy ISD, in the special contributor category.
The class will be honored at an induction banquet May 8 at the Ferrell Center. Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for students, and can be purchased by calling Tiffany Wilkins at (254) 829-1556.
