COPPERAS COVE — Brandon Hamilton got Copperas Cove on the board with a 99-yard touchdown run just more than three minutes into the game, and the Bulldawgs outgunned Waco High, 49-27.

In a contest full of long-distance scores, Waco High quarterback Deonte’ Phillips connected for strikes of 61 and 50 yards to Darrell Harris — his only two catches of the night — and another to Dennis Gibson for 58 yards.

But the Copperas Cove offense methodically broke down the Waco High defense, rushing for 394 yards on 51 carries.

Hamilton and William Randolph went for 197 and 100 yards, respectively, on the ground, while quarterback Orlando Thomas finished with 92.

Waco High was more balanced, running for 233 yards and throwing for 210.

The Bulldawgs (2-0) took control of the game by scoring 21 unanswered points in a span of 10 minutes starting late in the first quarter.

Hamilton broke a 7-all tie with a 3-yard plunge to paydirt, and Randolph sprinted into the end zone from 24 and 2 yards out to push Copperas Cove’s advantage to 28-7 at halftime.

Waco High got within two scores early in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard Gibson plunge, but the Bulldawgs put the game away for good when Thomas found Alex Johnson for a 20-yard strike with just less than five minutes to play.
